A man has allegedly assaulted his pregnant teenage partner and caused her to miscarry as the pair sought to "start afresh" by moving from Queensland to the NSW town of Condobolin.
Police were called to Orange Health Service on Tuesday after a 19-year-old woman - who was 21 weeks pregnant - had allegedly been assaulted and lost her baby.
The teenager first presented at the Condobolin District Hospital on Sunday before returning the next day in distress.
As the woman and her 21-year-old male partner travelled to Orange for the additional treatment she gave birth in the car. The baby girl was declared dead on arrival.
The couple had argued while travelling by car from Queensland, police say, and the man allegedly assaulted her on several occasions during the journey.
"Physically she's fine but emotionally she's quite devastated by what's transpired," Detective Chief Inspector Bruce Grassick told AAP on Wednesday.
He said the pair were relocating from Queensland to Condobolin - west of Parkes - to "start afresh" as a couple.
The man has been charged with recklessly inflicting grievous bodily harm and contravening an apprehended violence order.
He was refused bail when his case was in Orange Local Court on Wednesday. The matter is due back in the same court on March 26.
Det Chief Insp Grassick said no additional charges specifically related to the baby girl's death were anticipated.
