Police are searching for two people who were spotted fleeing the scene, one was said to “blood on his face”.

Police are searching for two people who were spotted fleeing the scene of a fatal shooting in Newcastle this afternoon.

Police and ambulance crews were called to a unit on Darby Street in Cooks Hill after residents in the area reported hearing gunshots.

They arrived to find a man in cardiac arrest and suffering a gunshot wound to his chest.

Paramedics attempted to treat the man but he died at the scene.

"There were two people in particular, a male and a female, who were seen around that time who were running away and it was suggested the male had blood on his face," police told NBN News.

Police said descriptions of the pair are varying and authorities are unsure which direction they ran.

Authorities are appealing to anyone who may have spotted the man and woman to contact police as soon as possible.

The victim is yet to be formally identified and an investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
