A man who raped and murdered a teenage football coach who had given him a place to sleep has been jailed in the UK.

Megan Newton, 18, was discovered dead in her unit in Stoke-on-Trent in central England last April.

Joseph Trevor, 19, was handed a a life sentence with a minimum term of 21 years and 65 days after he pleaded guilty to her murder and two charges of rape, the BBC reports.

In an ''act of kindness", Miss Newton had offered Trevor - who she knew from school - a place to sleep, Stafford Crown Court heard.

Prosecutor Adrian Keeling QC said she had invited him back "because he got so drunk on drink and drugs he could not face going home to his parents".

Trevor stabbed her in the back eight times after raping her and strangling her unconscious, the court heard.

Judge Michael Chambers QC said Trevor, the son of a retired police officer, carried out a "brutal and sustained attack" on Miss Newton.

After he learned her body had been found by a neighbour, Trevor admitted to his family that he had "done something bad" and was then arrested,

Miss Newton, a youth football coach and self-described "sports fanatic".

She planned to study physiotherapy or sports therapy and had been working towards an advanced football coaching qualification.

The court was read a tribute by Miss Newton's grandmother Beryl Smith.

"Megan's death has wiped out that spark in our lives," she wrote.

"We're heartbroken and always will remain so."
