A Melbourne resident has become a true "guitar hero" after fending off a pair of armed intruders with a musical instrument when they stormed into his Truganina home overnight.
The two men broke their way into Mike Conomy's Gilbee Road home and threatened him and his partner Annabelle Sutton with a knife about 1.50am.
The offenders demanded Mr Conomy hand over the keys to a Mercedes parked in the driveway of his home.
But he instead managed to fight off the attackers, grabbing his cheapest yet heaviest bass guitar and chasing the pair down the road before they jumped into a getaway car.
"Glass shattered everywhere, half the door is broken on the floor, and before we know it... they are asking for the keys, yelling at us for the keys," Ms Sutton told 9News.
The intruders retreated to a dark hatchback, where a man and women were waiting for them.
However Mr Conomy did not stop there, smashing the rear passenger side window with his guitar.
The couple were not physically injured and luckily the guitar has just a few scratches.
Wyndham Crime Investigation Unit detectives are appealing for information or for anyone who witnessed the car in the vicinity to come forward.
The offenders are perceived to be Middle Eastern in appearance and were wearing hooded jumpers and had their faces covered.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
