A NSW man has been charged with a terrorism offence after a major federal police investigation into extreme behaviour among right-wing groups.

The man was picked up near the south coast town of Nowra, after the Australian Federal Police and NSW Police executed search warrants on premises in Sanctuary Point and Parma, the AFP said.

A NSW Joint Counter Terrorism Team has been investigating extreme right-wing behaviour in the state.
