Man allegedly hit with axe during service station argument

Two men were involved in a verbal altercation at a service station near Wollongong.

A man has allegedly been hit in the head with an axe during an argument at a service station.

Just after midday two men were involved in a verbal altercation at a service station on Shellharbour Road, Warilla.

The men moved outside, where police have been told one of the men was struck in the head with the butt of an axe, NSW Police said.

One of the men was taken to hospital with suspected head injuries and is now in a stable condition.

Police believe a woman may have been involved in the alleged altercation. The woman and a man allegedly fled the scene following the argument and have not been seen since.

The man is described as being of Caucasian appearance with a slim build, approximately 170cm tall. He was wearing a bandage on his head and a hospital band around his wrist at the time of the incident.

Police do not believe there is a threat to the general public.
