A man has been granted bail, accused of assaulting his 74-year-old neighbour with a steel star picket in Far North Queensland.

The older man was at his Aloomba home yesterday, cutting tree branches for mulching, when Christopher Lee allegedly hit him in the back of the neck with a piece of wood.

He's accused of making threats to the victim with a knife in his hand, before striking him with a steel star picket.

Mr Lee's defence lawyer said his client was owed a "significant amount of money for motor vehicle parts" the victim purchased more than two years ago.

The court heard the relationship between the pair had turned sour in recent years and Mr Lee went to the victims' house to inquire about the debt that was allegedly owed.

Neighbours told police they heard Mr Lee screaming in the street for over an hour, allegedly saying to the 74-year-old 'I'm going to kill you.....come out here."

Magistrate Trevor Black told Mr Lee the allegations against him were quite serious, and granted him bail on strict conditions.

He's been charged with committing an act intended to cause grievous bodily harm and committing a public nuisance offence.

As part of his bail conditions, the 44-year-old is banned from attending the township of Aloomba and will have to live with family members.

The matter will return to court on the 15th of July.
