The Labor Party today sensationally resigned from the Labor Party, marking the latest instalment of factional fighting within the Tasmanian chapter.

In a statement provided to the media, the Labor Party declared it would leave itself and sit on the cross-benches, citing ‘significant and irreconcilable differences’ with the Labor Party.

Later in the day the Labor Party also issued a brief statement, saying that the Labor Party had tendered its resignation and that it had been accepted. The Labor Party would remain in Parliament, the statement clarified, but would not be allowed to participate in any Labor Party matters.

“It’s disappointing that we’ve got to this point,” said a Labor Party source to Tasmanian Times. “But really, we can no longer see eye-to-eye with the Labor Party on important issues. Like how to back-stab sitting members. They’ve been doing it totally wrong.”

The accusations brought a stinging rebuke from the Labor Party.

“Well, those people are beyond the pale,” shot back a Labor Party member at his former colleague. “Their ‘grievance processes’ are nothing but witch-hunts. The searchlight on the hill. They have no respect for proper Labor Party traditions, like branch stacking in the run-up to an election.”

The Labor Party gave no indication that it would be open to a future reconciliation with the Labor Party.

“Let’s just say that we have other things to focus on right now,” said the spokesperson. “The Labor Party can go do penance on the cross-bench while we get on with the important things in politics. And that’s ourselves.”

IN OTHER NEWS a Liberal MP was taken to hospital after bursting his sides laughing. Speaker Mark Shelton had to interrupt the House of Assembly session so that a stretcher team of paramedics could enter the chamber. Due to the member rolling gustily on the floor, it took a few minutes to remove him to the ambulance and restore order.
