The man from Madurai, in the state of Tamil Nadu, rented the aircraft for two hours and had 161 guests onboard, local media reported.

The cap on gatherings in the region is 50 people due to the deadly COVID-19 pandemic.

The plane was operated by SpiceJet and the Times of India reported that crew on the chartered jet have been stood down for breaching coronavirus protocols.

There have been more than 26 million COVID-19 cases in India since the pandemic began with infections and deaths surging in the past month.
