A grandmother has been rushed to hospital after being mauled by a dog north of Brisbane.

Barbara Verstandig was on her routine morning walk along the water at Deception Bay when an off-leash Staffordshire terrior escaped from a nearby home and charged at her dog Daisy.

The 63-year-old was taken to hospital with punctures, scratches and bites on her arms and back.

She told 9News she's grateful it was her and not her eight-year-old granddaughter Olivia who was attacked.

"If my granddaughter had had Daisy and the dog had come, can you imagine what would have happened to her?" Ms Verstandig said.

"I just picked Daisy up and then held her as hard as I could but this dog was trying to drag Daisy out of my arms.

"Then I felt the dog bite me, I felt the dog bite me on my back."

Daisy, who was also injured, was rushed to the vet.

Ms Verstandig said she will avoid that walking path for a while to hopefully avoid Daisy developing any long-term anxiety.

The staffy was later found wandering the streets.

The owners have agreed to have it put down.
