A grandmother from Adelaide who crashed and killed her granddaughter after trying to play a children's song on her phone has been given an 18-month suspended term.

The judge said jailing the woman, who was distracted by her phone for up to five seconds, would only add to the family's tragedy.

The two-year-old died and a six-year-old was seriously injured in the crash in July last year.

The car hit a truck on the Sturt Highway.
