The man who murdered British backpacker Grace Millane in New Zealand has been jailed for life.

The 28-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was sentenced to a non-parole period of 17 years in the High Court of Auckland this morning.

Ms Millane, 21, was strangled to death by the killer in his apartment just hours after they met on a Tinder date on December 1, 2018.

Grace Millane was backpacking around New Zealand when she was murdered on a date.

Ms Millane's body was later found buried in bushland in a suitcase.

The backpacker's parents David and Gillian Millane, who had attended the murder trial, were not in court for the sentencing.

Mrs Millane delivered a witness statement to the court via videolink from the UK, Stuff reports.

"Grace is the youngest of my three children," she told the court.

"Grace was never just a daughter, she was my very best friend.

"We laughed together. She was truly beautiful, with a smile that lit up a room."

Mrs Millane then addressed the killer directly.

"You have ripped a hole in my heart," she said.

"My Grace's life was stolen.

"Your barbaric actions towards my Grace ... no life sentence you will receive today will match our life sentence without her..

"I want you to know, I don't think about you. I simply don't care about you."

Detective Inspector Scott Beard said he had spoken with the Millanes after the sentence was delivered.

"I've spoken to the family, they are pleased with the sentence but they won't get Grace back," he said.

"No matter what the outcome was today, they will forever have a life sentence."

In the moments after Ms Millane's death, her killer took photos of the body, searched online for the rural area where the body was later found and watched pornography.

The following day he hired a car, bought a suitcase and cleaned his apartment before going on another Tinder date with a second woman.

He buried the suitcase containing Ms Millane's body in bushland the next day.

More to come.
