The government has been advised to ban mass public gatherings of over 500 people to help stop the spread of coronavirus.
"I have been told by one of the officials that the advice the government will get is that any mass gathering of over 500 people should be cancelled from now on so that will cancel every football game, every theatre event and a large gathering, really," Nine's political editor Chris Uhlmann said.
"It's the most extraordinary year that Australia have seen since 1919."
Uhlmann said it is essential to "flatten the disease", and there are particular concerns about Indigenous communities.
The government will make an official announcement this afternoon.
More to come.
