A Malaysian flight attendant who smuggled parcels of heroin inside her underwear into Melbourne has been jailed for nine-and-a-half years.

Zailee Zainal smuggled the drug packages between her legs and inside her bra and underwear eight times to pay for her sick daughter's hospital bills.

The mother-of-three was recruited by colleagues after they found out she desperately needed money to afford her daughter's treatment.

"I was vulnerable and willing to do anything," she told the court.

The Malindo Air hostess spent three months learning to walk through the airport with the packages of drugs strapped to her body.

She took eight flights from Malaysia to Melbourne with the 1kg packages - worth a street value of nearly $3 million - buried underneath her clothes.

Zainal would meet a woman at a hotel in the city – another member of the international syndicate – to exchange the drugs for cash.

She would only personally pocket $6500, all of which would go towards her daughter's medical treatment.

Australian Border Force officers discovered the parcels on the woman after she was selected for a search upon arrival to Melbourne Airport on January 6 last year.

County Court Judge Michael Cahill said Zainal was deserving of some leniency.

Zainal could be freed in three years and deported back to Malaysia.

If she had been caught in her home country, she would have likely received the death penalty.
