Fire in Shoalhaven official ‘out’ after 74 days burning

NSW Rural Fire Service announce the end of the Currowan Fire in the Shoalhaven which burnt through almost 500,000 hectares of land and destroyed 312 homes.

NSW Rural Fire Service have announced the end of a blaze in the Shoalhaven region, which has burnt through almost 500,000 hectares of land and destroyed 312 homes.

The Currowan Fire was officially "set to out" last night, after burning for 74 days.

It consumed 499,621 hectares and spans from each end of the Shoalhaven and damaged a further 173 homes.

However, the NSW RFS were quick to mention the heroics of firefighters on the ground, saved 1,889 homes.

The Currowan fire was sparked by a lightning strike and has been burning since November 26.

It's understood heavy rain across the weekend has helped put out the remaining hotspots of the fire.
