Fears town’s drinking water is contaminated after firefighting helicopter crashes

There are fears a reservoir where a helicopter fighting fires crashed could now be contaminated.

Lachie Onslow was flying the helicopter above the Ben Boyd Reservoir in the Ben Boyd National Park at Edrom just after 4pm when it lost power.

Miraculously, the 47-year-old was able to free himself from the wreckage and escaped with minor injuries, but the wreckage of the aircraft remains submerged.

Pilot Lachie Onslow.

He is expected to make a full recovery.

The helicopter had been fighting bushfires around Bega and Eden when it crashed into the dam.

Inquiries continue into the incident with the reservoir currently closed as a drinking supply, and alternative arrangements being managed by local council, NSW Police said today.

An operation to recover the aircraft will be coordinated.
