AFP Commissioner Reece Kershaw has told parents it’s essential that they know what their children are doing online during the pandemic.

Australian Federal Police Commissioner, Reece Kershaw, has told parents it's essential that they know what their children are doing online, amid an explosion of child exploitation incidents during the covid pandemic.

The Commissioner, who has been in the job for 12 months, says his officers are encountering a massive spike in cases of children being groomed and incidences of extortion, in which they are tricked into sending photos to online predators.

Mr Kershaw has told Nine News the AFP is finding millions of horrific photos and videos, particularly on the Dark Web.

But it's not just the unknown recesses of the internet that present a danger.

Mr Kershaw warns that seemingly innocent websites such as TikTok and Facebook are not safe and can easily present a danger to the unwary.

He also warned that criminals would be able to act with impunity if Facebook proceeds with plans for fully encrypted messaging, which would prevent any type of monitoring by law enforcement agencies.
