A parent from an elite Melbourne private school has tested positive to coronavirus.

Scotch College boys' school in Hawthorn, in Melbourne's inner-east, confirmed the diagnosis in a letter to families today.

"Late last night the school received confirmation that a member of our parent body had, over the weekend, tested positive for COVID-19," principal Tom Batty said.

"The parent informed that they had been self-isolating since Tuesday of last week.

"The parent has two sons in the Senior School, neither of whom has displayed any symptoms of COVID-19. Both boys are now self-isolating."

Mr Batty said the school would be closed to boys today.

It comes as Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews confirmed the state's schools will shut gates at the end of today for early holidays.

"These are not ordinary school holidays. Every Australian has been advised not to undertake non-essential travel," Mr Andrews said.

The premier cautioned parents to keep a close eye on what children did on their holidays and ensure they maintain tight social distancing laws.

A number of Victorian schools have confirmed positive cases of COVID-19, including a student and five parents at Geelong Grammar School; two parents at Kensington Primary School and teachers at both Middle Park Primary School and Toorak Primary School.
