A northern NSW bottle shop was hit by an intruder recently but this wasn't your usual break and enter.

A thirsty echidna wandered the aisles of the BWS store in Kyogle, browsing through the shop's wine range before checking out the beer fridge.

The critter knocked over several bottles of vodka and liqueur, which left broken glass for staff to clean up the next day.

Thirsty echidna pays a visit to NSW bottle shop

The shopping trip proved to be too much excitement for the echidna, who fell asleep under some shelving, where workers found him the next morning.

Wildlife carers released the echidna, who was unharmed during the bottle-o trip, back into the wild.
