Eight students from Adelaide’s Scotch College have been rushed to hospital after the bus they were travelling in rolled near the South Australian and Victorian border on Wednesday afternoon.

Two teenagers were flown to the Women’s and Children’s Hospital with serious injuries, while six others were taken to the Mount Gambier and Districts hospital. One has since been discharged.

In total, 13 people were injured when the bus carrying 21 students and four adults rolled onto its roof near the Victorian town of Nelson.

Scotch College Principal Dr John Newton says the students were being transported to a senior and intermediate rowing camp, and that no other vehicles were involved in the crash.

He described the injuries sustained by the students as “minor to moderate”, and all students and staff are receiving the appropriate medical treatment.

“All families of students and staff involved in the accident have been notified and are being updated as appropriate information comes to hand,” he said.

Victorian Police do not know the cause of the crash but have interviewed the driver and enquiries are pending in relation to possible prosecution.

“The bus was coming around the corner and for some reason it has lost control, we haven’t quite got to the crux of how it happened.

“We have spoken to the driver, he has been interviewed and enquiries are pending in relation to the prosecution of him,” Victoria Police Sergeant Ryan Nelson says.

Rowing Australia has reached out in response to the college’s statement, saying, “the thoughts of everyone at Rowing Australia, and all of the rowing community, are with you all”.
