Another person has died in hospital from injuries sustained after the Whakaari/White Island volcano eruption in New Zealand in December.

That brings the official death toll to 21, 19 of whom died in New Zealand and two in Australia.

"Police can confirm a further person died at Middlemore Hospital last night as a result of injuries suffered in the Whakaari/White Island eruption," New Zealand Deputy Commissioner John Tims said in a statement today.

The name of the person will be released after wider family have been informed.

The volcano erupted on December 9, showering tourists with ash, molten rock and toxic gas.

At least sixteen Australian residents or citizens were among those confirmed or presumed dead following the disaster.

Many of the victims were passengers on the Ovation of the Seas cruise ship and were visiting the island for a tour when the eruption occurred.
