Premier refuses to acknowledge Mental Health

The Premier’s handling of the proposed prison site at Brushy Rivulet Crown Reserve at Westbury is a disgrace. Mr Gutwein claims he wants to look after the people of Tasmania and is concerned for their mental health. His inability to meet with directly affected neighbours, clearly shows his lack of compassion, empathy and failure to keep his promises.

The fact the Premier is traversing all over Tasmania, but is yet to meet with CROWPS members after numerous invitations since the announcement on18 June 2020 is appalling. It strongly indicates he realises bulldozing a Reserve for a prison will taint his election campaign.

The announcement of the new location for the proposed Northern Regional Prison at Brushy Rivulet Reserve has already taken a huge toll on the mental health of residents neighbouring the site, as well as the wider community. The Government’s media release on 3 March 2021 announcing the extended time frame has again exacerbated these issues.

At Mr Gutwein’s first press conference upon becoming Premier of Tasmania in January 2020, he touted that his government was “one of conviction, of compassion, and importantly one of opportunity for all”.

CROWPS are frustrated that the proposed Northern Regional Prison site issue has simply vanished from the Premier’s public agenda during his election campaign. The Premier needs to stop hiding from the prison debate and engage with the wider community.

Obviously votes rate higher than mental health.
