Media release – Dr Mark Veitch, Director of Public Health, 12 March 2021
COVID-safe event management
Public Health Services is committed to working with event organisers to ensure larger public events can occur safely in Tasmania.
As recent experiences in mainland state demonstrate, the risk of COVID-19 cases and outbreaks is real and has resulted widespread disruptive lockdowns.
As we conduct events with large gatherings of people, we must do so in a way that minimises the chances of a COVID-19 outbreak occurring. This involves event organisers and patrons working together to help keep themselves and the wider Tasmanian community safe.
Current COVID-19 restrictions limit dancing at larger outdoor events to 250 people, provided this is in accordance with an approved plan for the event.
If an event organiser wishes to include dancing in their plan – and can demonstrate they can manage people dancing in accordance with COVID-safe protocols – there is no impediment to this happening.
Directions that apply to events and gatherings are regularly reviewed to ensure they enable activities while also providing effective protection for the Tasmanian community.
