As coronavirus hysteria sweeps the world with panic buying and travel restrictions, Sydneysiders have started community kindness initiatives to help those in need.

Dan Folkes and Hayley Johnston connected on social media a week ago, with both looking for ways to help those struggling during this difficult time.

They came up with "Corona Cares", an initiative where they offer their assistance to anyone who needs it.

"We got them printed yesterday and we started distributing last night," Mr Folkes told 9News.

Today the duo hit the streets of Cronulla in Sydney's south, handing out pamphlets to members of the public and local businesses that have a checklist of services they offer.

"The idea is for us to get in front of people, hard copy stuff for the elderly that don't get online, that don't use the internet, so if they're visiting cafes, restaurants, they can pick one up and ask for our help," Ms Johnston said.

Balmain man David Walsman formed a Facebook group calling for help and within days it expanded into a national website.

ViralKindness.org.au is a way for people around the country to connect, who are looking to respond to the crisis with kindness.

"We feel the people who need help, might not be on social media," ViralKindness.org.au's Mark Connelly told 9News.

"To get groceries, their prescriptions, maybe their mail - I think this could bring out the best in the community, rather than the hoarding that's been going on."
