Police have found a car belonging to young mother Ellie Price, who was murdered in South Melbourne earlier this week.

Homicide detectives have found a car belonging to young mother Ellie Price, whose body was found in South Melbourne earlier this week, as a manhunt for her alleged killer continues.

Ms Price's Mercedes was discovered in Diggers Rest last night, about 40 kilometres from the South Melbourne apartment where her body was discovered.

Police believe the car was used as a getaway vehicle by Ms Price's former partner Ricardo Barbaro.

The 33-year-old remains at large since Ms Price's body was found at the Park Street crime scene about 2.15pm on Monday.

The Mercedes was last seen leaving the Park Street location a week before Ms Price's body was found and police suspect that may have been when the alleged murder occurred.

"Barbaro and Ellie were known to each other and were believed to be in a relationship with each other from time to time since about October 2019," Detective Inspector Tim Day said.

"(She) has a family who is grieving for her and a community that is needing and deserving of answers."

Devastated family and friends have shared their heartache over Ms Price's shocking death.

"She was my baby. I am going to miss her," Ms Price's mother Tracey Gangell posted on Facebook on Tuesday.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, her mother and sister are unable to travel from their home in Tasmania to Victoria where the investigation is ongoing.

Investigators are warning anyone who comes across Barbaro to contact police immediately.

Police believe Barbaro could now be travelling in his white 2009 Toyota Hiace van, registration, 1OZ 8PC.

"We know he would have had contact with family and friends," Det. Insp. Day said.

"My warning is to those people that they do not want to put themselves in jeopardy of an accessory charge by harbouring him or assisting him during this time.

"This is not going to go away. This is an opportunity for you to come forward right now."

Anyone who sees Barbaro or has information on his whereabouts is urged to contact police immediately.

Ricardo Barbaro is a member of the Barbaro crime family and brother of Sydney underworld boss Pasquale Timothy Barbaro, 35, who was gunned down in 2016.

His grandfather Peter Pasquale Barbaro was also gunned down in Brisbane in 1990 while his cousin Pasquale Barbaro was killed alongside underworld figure Jason Moran while watching a children's football training session in 2003.

Mr Barbaro's uncle - another Pasquale Barbaro, from Griffith, NSW- was the kingpin in the world's biggest ecstasy bust in 2007. He was sentenced in Melbourne to 30 years in jail in 2012.
