Bunnings has removed a controversial Christmas inflatable amid suggestions it was inappropriate to sell.

The Axe Throwing Santa, by Lytworx, was part of the hardware giant's festive range for 2020, released in August.

But the item came under fire for depicting Mr Claus throwing an axe at one of his reindeers.

On its website Bunnings described the product as something that would "add some fun to your home this Xmas with this inflatable Santa throwing his Axe at a reindeer".

Bunnings said the 1.8 metre garden inflatable would "surely add a touch of festive charm to your home".

The reindeer even rotated on a bullseye as it lay in wait for the weapon to be thrown, surrounded by other axes, according to the description on the box.

It was being sold for $129 but has since been removed from the Bunnings website.

9News.com.au has contacted Bunnings for comment.
