Media Release – Brighton Council, 25 August 2021

Leigh Gray elected Mayor

Long-serving Brighton councillor Leigh Gray has been elected Brighton Municipality’s new mayor, replacing former Mayor Tony Foster who retired at the end of June this year.

Cr Gray was elected with 55.47 percent of the final vote.

Community leader Aaron De La Torre has been elected Brighton councillor, receiving 60.85 percent of the vote after the distribution of preferences.

Leigh Gray is married with four children. He grew up in Bridgewater and has lived in Brighton for 21 years. He was first elected to the council 16 years ago.

Cr Gray said he was humbled to lead council and thanked Brighton ratepayers for putting their trust in him to take on the role of mayor.

“My priority is to ensure we carry forward the essential plans we have for our great municipality and to continue the good work of former Mayor Tony Foster.

“With council reform now on the agenda, we face challenging times, but I am confident we will achieve our long-term strategic objectives,” Cr Gray said.

Mr De La Torre has a young family and has lived in Brighton his entire adult life. He was a founding member of the Lions Club of Brighton and has been actively involved in the local community for many years.
