Prime Minister invited to Tarkine crisis zone – Protests continue after six arrests
Protests continue this morning as Bob Brown Foundation invites Prime Minister Scott Morrison to visit the rainforests of takayna/Tarkine threatened by Chinese state owned mining company’s plans to build a massive tailings dam.
“Yesterday we wrote to Federal Environment Minister to make an nomination for Emergency National Heritage Listing of takayna/Tarkine based on the 2012 recommendation of the Australian Heritage Council”, said takayna/Tarkine Campaigner Scott Jordan.
“The Prime Minister should extend his visit to see first hand what is at risk.”
The Australian Heritage Council assessed and recommended a 439,000 hectare permanent National Heritage Listing in 2012.
Protestors have reentered the forests in the Pieman River region of takayna/Tarkine to prevent MMG from progressing their plans to pump 25 million cubic metres of toxic acid producing waste into ancient rainforest. Medical Student Hannah Birch is locked onto an access gate to prevent heavy equipment from being moved onto the site.
“I’m here in takayna/Tarkine taking frontline action because I believe the climate emergency is the greatest threat to life on Earth. Over the past months, I’ve spent weeks at the Pieman blockade in this ancient rainforest. I’ve met so many people from across the world defending the rainforests. Nurses, midwives, artists, scientists, doctors.
As a medical student, I have been taught for years about the devastating impact the climate crisis will have on human health. I feel the responsibility to do what I can to prevent this unnecessary loss of lives. Come and join us, for takayna/Tarkine’s threatened rainforests, the endangered species, and our future”, said medical student Hanna Birch.
Bob Brown Foundation has vowed to continue campaigning to prevent this project.
Protect the Tarkine
After 5 consecutive days of protests and arrests in the Tarkine this week this news is going unreported by main stream media thanks to government suppression and the power that big business has over the community. Protesters are putting themselves on the front line to protect our beautiful wilderness and I am proud to be part of a community that would like this area protected as a Tarkine National Park. Federal environment minister Sussan Ley: stop MMG from building a tailings dam in the pristine wilderness and protect this area now.
