A teenager with autism who went missing from the NSW Hunter Region has been found safe and well.

The 13-year-old was travelling with his mother from the NSW North Coast to the Blue Mountains when they stopped at a carpark rest stop on the corner of Masonite Road and the Pacific Highway at about 9pm.

He walked off along the Pacific Highway and police were called when he failed to return.

Following an appeal to the public, the teen was found at a high school in Katoomba at 8.30am today.

Police would like to thank the public for their help.
