In times of crisis, the small Gippsland town of Yarram has turned to art to boost morale, with seven murals already popping up around town.

Internationally renowned street artist, Heesco, is known for his famous murals in NSW and SA.

Now, the Mongolian artist is working to transform the town of Yarram with a range of spectacular murals.

"Not every day you get to paint a whole town," Heesco said.

"For any artist it's a very big honour to be able to do this. It's good for the community, good for the soul."

It all began a few years ago when Heesco caught the attention of local resident, Eric Greenaway.

"I was very inspired by the artwork… and then to find out that it was all put up in less than a day, I thought we have something remarkable here," Mr Greenaway said.

Heesco's first mural was at Bull Bar and Gallery, but residents wanted him back.

"I thought if we could get Heesco back and do 10 to add to the two that is already here, that would make 12 and then we could call Yarram a Heesco town, or a Heesco art town," Mr Greenaway said.

Heesco has been working on this spectacular project for four weeks, spray-painting famous faces and Gippsland identities across town walls.

"They depict actual real people who lived here or are still living here so it reflects the community, its history, culture and sentiments."

Residents in the community hope the murals will boost tourism in the area following the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the devastating East Gippsland bushfires.

"It's like an insurance policy for Yarram once all of this is over, we have been hit by the bushfires, people heard the word 'Gippsland' and didn't want to come and now coronavirus and shops have closed down," Yarram resident Wayne Tindall admits.

The renowned artist hopes to complete the remaining three artworks by the end of next week.
