An armed man has been shot dead by police north of Hobart after driving his car at officers.

Police were called to a property on Tea Tree Road in Brighton shortly before 8pm yesterday to a report of an armed man acting aggressively and making threats.

The man, 38, is alleged to have set fire to part of the home and driven at police before he was shot.

"This is a tragic event for all involved including the male, the family, the attending police and all emergency workers," Southern District Commander Tony Cerritelli said.

"It's a terrible event and there are no winners out of it."

A full Professional Standards investigation is underway.

"We train for those sorts of events, but you train with the view of never having to use it," Commander Cerritelli said.

The man's family, witnesses and emergency services workers involved in the shooting will be offered counselling and support.

No police officers were physically injured in the incident.

Brighton is about 25km north of Hobart.
