The Greens have announced Adam Bandt as the party’s new leader following the resignation of Richard Di Natale.
The Greens have elected Adam Bandt as the party's new leader following the resignation of Richard Di Natale.
Mr Bandt was formally endorsed by his federal party room colleagues in Canberra this morning.
Larissa Waters and Nick McKim have been elected co-deputies.
Mr Bandt has made his intentions clear.
He wants to fight for a "green new deal" and wean Australia off fossil fuels in favour of renewables.
"We are in the middle of a climate emergency and long-running jobs and inequality crises," Mr Bandt said.
"People are angry and anxious because the government has no plan for the big problems facing the country."
Senator Waters was elected for the first co-deputy position unopposed and will lead the party in the Senate.
The other co-deputy position was a three-way contest between Sarah Hanson-Young, Mehreen Faruqi and Senator McKim.
The changes come after Senator Di Natale announced his surprise resignation as leader yesterday.
Senator Di Natale led the Greens for nearly five years and said he wants to spend more time with his family.
"My boys are nine and 11 years old and they have only ever known their dad as a busy, tired and sometimes grumpy politician," he said.
"As they grow up quickly to become young men, I want to spend more time by their side than a relentless political schedule allows."
More to come.
