The ACT has recorded its first death from COVID-19.

ACT Chief Health Officer Dr Kerryn Coleman said a woman in her 80s passed away at the Canberra Hospital over the weekend.

The woman contracted the virus overseas.

"This is the very sad reality of this disease, which is seeing the elderly at an increased risk of complications from COVID-19," Dr Coleman said in a statement.

ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr urged all Canberrans to play their part in reducing the spread of the virus, describing the territory's first death as "terribly sad news".

"I hope this serves as a tragic reminder as to just how serious this situation is," Mr Barr said.

The Chief Minister also issued a plea to Canberrans to avoid any non-essential travel to the South Coast region.

The area has been trying to rebuild, after being ravaged by bushfires over summer, but now coastal communities don't want visitors over fears a spread of coronavirus could put a strain on its already limited health services.

"There are no ICU beds in any of the South Coast hospitals. The ACT, here in Canberra, we have the best healthcare facilities in Southern New South Wales, those communities do not need extra people," Mr Barr said.

Meanwhile there has been one new confirmed case recorded in the past 24 hours, bringing the ACT's total to 78.

Authorities say the case is a female in her 30s and the case was linked to overseas travel.

There are two cases still under investigation by ACT Health.

There are currently six COVID-19 patients in Canberra Hospital. The rest are isolating at home with ACT Health support.

A total of two cases have recovered from COVID-19 and have been released from self-isolation.

While there remains no evidence of community transmission in the ACT, authorities said it is likely to emerge.

Earlier today, Tasmania recorded its first death.

The national toll is now 18.
