Maureen Appleby was admitted to the Austin Hospital in the city's northeast after she fell and broke four ribs.

While receiving treatment for her injuries, hospital staff noticed Ms Appleby had symptoms and she was diagnosed with coronavirus.

It is believed Ms Appleby contracted the virus before she had the fall, and upon further investigation it is likely her 69-year-old son, John passed it on to her.

John has not recently travelled overseas so Ms Appleby's case is a confirmed community contamination.

Both Ms Appleby and her son have remained in Austin Hospital's isolation ward and have now made a full recovery.

Ms Appleby was released from hospital today.
